The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is a cooperative adventure game in which the players attempt to complete a scenario, each with three heroes of their choice and a deck of allies, events and attachments to support them. Each round, players send their heroes and allies to quest or to fight with enemies that engage them. However, as the heroes and allies exhaust after questing, defending, or attacking, the players' options are typically insufficient to deal with everything at once. Therefore, players need to determine whether it is more urgent to quest and make progress in the scenario while the enemy forces gain power, or to take down enemies while making no progress, not knowing what will come next.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is the base game of a Living Card Game for which new adventure packs are released monthly. The base game contains three scenarios, twelve famous characters from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien (including Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Denethor and Eowyn), and four pre-constructed player decks. Players can either use one of these decks or construct their own deck to increase their chances to be succesful in the more challenging scenarios. The monthly adventure packs contain a new scenario, a new hero, and new player cards to be used in their deck. The base game is for 1-2 players, but with an additional base game the scenarios can be played with up to four players.

Although this game is set in Tolkien's Middle Earth, the scenarios do not represent scenes from the books, but rather take place in the seventeen years from Bilbo's 111th birthday until Frodo's departure from the Shire.

The scenarios from saga-expansions do represent scenes from the books. Saga-expansions will form the Campaign Mode so that you can play all the saga quests that deal with the trilogy (+ Hobbit) together in one marathon campaign.

Confront a dangerous cult in A Shadow in the East, the eighth deluxe expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game! The power of Mordor stretches across the realm, darkening the hearts of those who fall under its influence and threatening the once-peaceful lands of Rhûn. Only Middle-earth's bravest heroes can hope to stand against the spread of evil when a band of desperate Dorwinions come to ask for aid. Your team of heroes will embark on a dangerous journey into darkness in three new quests that take you down the River Running, to the capital city of Dorwinion, and further into the Hills of Rhûn.

With new hero and player cards to further customize your adventures, this deluxe expansion kicks off the "Vengeance of Mordor" cycle with grand fanfare, introducing the game's first double-sided hero, as well as a new version of The One Ring and a new card type in the form of contracts. Assemble your Fellowship and prepare for a daring mission in the shadow of Mordor!

In Attack on Dol Guldur, players join the host of Lórien in a direct attack against Sauron’s Mirkwood stronghold taken straight from the appendix for The Return of the King. This unique scenario can be played by 1-4 players in Standard Game Mode or 3-12 players in Epic Multiplayer Mode. Only one copy of Attack on Dol Guldur is required to play Standard Game Mode, while three copies are required for Epic Multiplayer Mode. The scenario includes two double-sided setup cards, one for each mode, that players use to play the game in the desired fashion.

Beneath the Sands is the third Adventure Pack in the Haradrim cycle for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game.

There's more than Haradrim to fear among the lands of Harad. There are the jungles and the beasts that lair within them. There are the Orcs and Wargs sent by the Dark Lord of Mordor to patrol the region. And there are the deadly expanses of desert, where the sun and dehydration can kill you slowly, provided you're not first captured and eaten by the hidden predators that lie in wait.

In Beneath the Sands, several of Middle-earth's greatest heroes continue their perilous journey through the hostile lands of Harad, only to find evidence of giant spiders that have dragged people under the dunes. Compelled to investigate, your heroes must crawl into the spider's tunnels, only to navigate a scenario that weaves through a labyrinth of cobweb-choked darkness, blocked passages, and deadly spiders. Time is of the essence, as the spiders' victims may yet be alive, but you'll need to be clever and attentive lest you become lost underground.

With scenario-specific rules that allow you to squander your progress when you get off-track, even if you quest successfully, Beneath the Sands places an emphasis upon the game's questing and exploration in a way that truly allows you to feel trapped in a maze. Fortunately, the Adventure Pack also comes with a new Scout hero and twenty-seven player cards (three copies each of nine different cards) to help you get back onto the proper path—or forge your own.

Escape from Khazad-dûm invites you to enter this massive underground realm and create a custom-built The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game scenario filled with Spiders, Goblins, and other perilous encounters of your choice. As you play, you’ll come across many familiar cards with new and unexpected abilities, creating a unique new experience. It features rules for cooperative play as well as a team vs team variant, where each team will build the encounter deck for the opposing team. This pack also integrates with the The Mines of Moria custom scenario pack.

Fire in the Night is the third Adventure Pack in the Ered Mithrin cycle for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game! You thought you could rest. After roaming far across Wilderland and slaying two powerful Dragon spawn, you have arrived at the Woodman settlement of Hrogar’s Hill, where you hope to gain some much-needed respite from the dangers that have plagued you throughout your recent days. But it is not meant to be. Shortly after starting a meal, you are roused by the sound of alarm. Outside, a terrifying red-orange glow has cut a swath through the black night. The Dragons’ mother has arrived to exact her revenge.

The first deluxe expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, Khazad-dûm transports you to the ancient realm of the Dwarves with 165 new cards (with three copies each of its player cards), including new scenarios, encounter sets, heroes, allies, attachments, and events.

From Orcs and Trolls to Ringwraiths and Dragons, Middle-earth is a rich and expansive world, filled with fantastic and iconic creatures. As you venture into the ancient Dwarven realm of Khazad-dûm, you'll enter a place in Middle-earth far removed from the settings and creatures represented by the Core Set encounter cards. Dark tunnels teem with goblins, and any wrong turn could send you plummeting through pits to find yourself confronted by older and fouler things than Orcs.

Therefore, in addition to expanding your existing game experience, Khazad-dûm introduces nine all-new encounter sets. These unique sets, when combined into encounter decks (as instructed by the rules), make up the three included scenarios in Khazad-dûm.

Roam Across Rhovanion is the second Adventure Pack in the "Ered Mithrin" cycle for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. After venturing deep into the Grey Mountains, your path leads to the orcish stronghold of Gundabad. Before you can infiltrate this fortress, however, you must forge an uneasy alliance with a treacherous Goblin and travel across Rhovanion in search of his lost items.

This pack's sixty cards include the first hero to bear the Woodman trait, forming the foundation for an entirely new type of deck. Additionally, the pack contains three copies each of eight different player cards, including some that bring some relief to the encounter deck itself.

You thought your adventures in Dorwinion had come to an end. The future seemed bright after you drove the shadow of Mordor back and rescued the captives from the Temple of Sauron. But Mordor did not let such a defeat go unpunished for long. With threats of vengeance fresh on his lips, Thane Ulchor struck Dorwinion with an army of Easterlings in a devastating sneak attack. The Dunland Trap features a combat-heavy new scenario in which your heroes must battle their way to freedom against waves of ferocious Dunlendings. Additionally, among its sixty cards, you'll find a new Silvan hero and three copies of each player card, many of which introduce greater shape and surprises to the Silvan trait. Moreover, as it begins "The Ring-maker" cycle, The Dunland Trap also provides more support for the Mount trait, as well as the Time X and Doomed X mechanisms featured in The Voice of Isengard, and players will also discover thematic ties to Saruman and the White Council.

The Ghost of Framsburg is the fourth Adventure Pack in the Ered Mithrin cycle for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game! To kill a Dragon, you need a weapon that is capable of the deed.
